GOODWILL MESSAGE BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. BABAJIDE OLUSOLA SANWO-OLU, GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE AT THE 2019 ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND GALA NITE OF THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF ARBITRATORS UK (NIGERIA BRANCH) HELD AT LANDMARK EVENT CENTER, LAGOS, ON THURSDAY, 7 TH NOVEMBER, 2019.

Protocol,

Let me first say a warm welcome to everyone here present especially those who have travelled from outside Nigeria to attend this conference holding in Lagos State, the Nation’s Centre of Excellence and Africa’s emerging smart city.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Nigeria branch, organisers of this conference must be commended for
their tenacity in promoting the Alternative Dispute Resolution option through this annual conference platform
since 1999. This year’s conference with the theme “Positioning Africa: The Changing Landscape in Alternative Dispute Resolution” provides another opportunity for us to appreciate the increasing relevance
of ADR occupies in our justice delivery system especially against the backdrop of recent and unfolding
developments, not only in Africa but also in the global arena.

The imperative for ADR is basically premised on the need to reduce the pressure on our courts by offering another window for settling disputes amicably and to the satisfaction of all parties involved.

Lagos State has been in the forefront of advancing the cause of ADR with the establishment of the Citizens Mediation Centre and the Multi-Door Court House which have been very effective in settling issues that would have ended in acrimonious litigation. We believe we can achieve much more with the establishment of more ADR Centres and increased public awareness advocacy.

In the very near future, the number of disputes arising from business transactions will most likely increase as a result of the expected trade activities arising from the newly signed Africa Continental Trade Agreement. We
must plan ahead by strengthening the capacity of our ADR institutions to ensure smooth and quick resolution of most of the anticipated number of disputes.

I am quite appreciative of the vision and foresightedness of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigeria Branch in choosing such a contemporary theme for this conference.

I look forward to the new ideas that this conference will come up with to adequately strengthen our ADR
institutions in the light of emerging technological innovations.

I wish you a very successful conference.

Thank you.

Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu
Governor of Lagos State,
Alausa, Ikeja.
7th November, 2019.
